Over 60 years since the establishment of the People¡¯s Republic of China, Chinese trade union organizations have been growing steadily and constantly. At the end of 1949, the number of nationwide union members reached 2.374 million, making up 29.3% of the country¡¯s total workers. By 2008, the number of countrywide primary trade unions had increased to 1.725 million and the primary trade union organizations had covered 3.682 million enterprises and institutions with legal capacity, with the number of union members totaling 212 million and the membership rate reaching 73.7%; the number of peasant-worker members had reached 72.166 million, with the membership rate exceeding 50%. ACFTU has become the biggest trade union organization in the world.
